How do I get wordpress to auto upgrade with 1and1 hosting?

By Bryon On September 2, 2012 No Comments

If you are a 1and1.com user and are having problems getting the auto upgrade to work (for both the core and plugins), here’s the fix.

Add the following line to the top of your .htaccess file (in the root directory of your WP install):

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

This post is to help anyone who is using 1and1 hosting services with a custom install of wordpress. If you are having problems getting  WordPress to update automaticly,  This will also make the plugins and themes auto update.  If you have had this problem for a long time and just continued on without updating you might need to update wordpress manually first.  If you plan on upgrading across more than two major releases, please consider upgrading incrementally to avoid potential conflicts. For example, if you plan on upgrading from 2.5 to 3.4.1, upgrade to 2.7 first, followed by 2.9, and finally 3.4.1. Essential, it’s okay to skip one release, but never skip TWO when upgrading.

Older versions of WordPress can be downloaded from the release archive.

If you are using a recent version of wordpress and this is the first time for you to upgrade,  the auto upgrade function will be fine when you get it to work.  This is a common problem that has a pretty simple solution. However there are a few problems that may prevent most people from fixing it.

  1. Maybe you don’t know what the problem is, or how to identify it.
  2. You don’t know how to use an FTP program to upload files to your website.
  3. You haven’t found the  .htaccess file is or how to edit/upload it.

How to get wordpress to auto upgrade with 1and1 hosting.

To fix the problems associated with your auto-updates for the WordPress system, you’ll need access to your .htaccess file. This file is generally in the root directory for your website – the same folder that contains your wp-config.php file.

I use fielzilla for ftp purposes,  it is a free tool built by mozilla firefox.  If you don’t know how to use a ftp client this is a great time to learn.

Open filezilla and connect to your site.
locate the .htaccess file.
right click and select edit.  this will open the file in notepad
copy and paste the line  (  AddType x-mapp-php5 .php  ) to the top of the file.
save and close the file,  filezilla will ask if you want to upload the changes, select yes.
Return to your blog and try the auto update function again.

Your .htaccess file needs to contain the following code in order to configure your WordPress site to update/upload files to itself:

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
If you have anything else in your .htaccess file already, place this above that information.  When you open the file to edit it, just add the code to a clean line at the top.  I have  been able to make the updates/installation process work by adding  just the one line of code to the top of my .htaccess.  Good luck with your WordPress website. If you have FTP access and a simple text editor like Notepad to open the .htaccess file, these are pretty simple changes.
